Weight loss with acupuncture – the Schlüsener method

There is no miracle diet. There are serious, effective methods that have stood the test of decades and are recommended by word of mouth. The Schlüsener method is one of them. It takes away your craving for food – and we accompany you on your personal way to your desired weight.

Why this method works

Most people know exactly what they should eat. The problem is not knowledge but craving. That is precisely where the Schlüsener method comes in: a special ear acupuncture suppresses the urge to eat and at the same time has a strongly calming effect. It is combined with a way of eating that allows no deficiency – vitamins, minerals, trace elements and sufficient protein are guaranteed – and with a new eating behaviour that is easy to put into practice in everyday life.

The needles take away your craving. Losing weight is, strictly speaking, a by-product – a very welcome one.

Dr Kerle has worked with acupuncture since 1987 and has practised the Schlüsener method in Berlin for many years. As a medical specialist she accompanies you with an eye on your state of health, your medication and your metabolism. This combination of a proven method and medical experience is what sets our practice apart.

How the treatment works

  1. Introductory seminar. Dr Kerle personally explains the background and mode of action of the method developed by Heinz Schlüsener, the special acupuncture technique and the change in eating behaviour. We discuss pre-existing conditions and medication.
  2. Acupuncture. The ear acupuncture is tailored to you individually. Fine semi-permanent needles remain in the ear under a plaster. Hypoallergenic needles and plasters are of course available.
  3. Diet plan. You receive your individualised plan for the three-week reduction phase – clear, complete, practical.
  4. Weekly support. Once a week you come in to be weighed and to talk. If you live far away, we also support you by phone.
  5. Maintenance phase. In the following three weeks you stabilise your weight with the maintenance plan. You learn to adjust your diet to your actual needs – the basis for lasting success. If necessary, a further reduction phase follows after a break, until you have reached your target weight.

If you really want it, you will succeed

The decision to lose weight can never be spontaneous. Just as the pounds slowly add up, the readiness for change has to grow within you. Daily life stays as it is: family, work, everyday routine, worries. You lose weight for yourself alone.

For most people the time then does not feel like a struggle at all. The calming and hunger-suppressing effect of the acupuncture makes it possible to live through the weeks of reduced calorie intake without any significant feeling of deprivation. Many experience this time as a cleansing and a very positive change. That experience leads you to success – and to more mobility, self-confidence and joy of life.

What you can expect

How much you lose depends on your starting weight, your metabolism and your consistency – there is no such thing as “half” an addiction treatment. Those who stick to the plan see the change on the scales and in the mirror. Where excess weight has led to high blood pressure or diabetes, the readings frequently improve as the weight comes down, in our experience; we monitor medication medically during this time and adjust it.

During the treatment you will lose volume everywhere, not just in individual places. Most people feel fit and balanced – sluggish, grumpy weeks are not part of this method.

Costs – and why they pay off

Price
Complete package for new patients – introductory seminar, acupuncture, diet and maintenance plan, weekly support over three weeks of reduction and three weeks of maintenance €120
Returning patients – further reduction phase with acupuncture and support, without the seminar €60

Six weeks of comprehensive medical support for 120 euros – that is deliberately calculated. During the reduction phase, snacks, sweets, eating out and the big weekly shop all fall away. In our experience the savings on food offset the cost of the treatment. The treatment is a self-pay service; some private insurers reimburse acupuncture in part.

Who the method is not suitable for

The Schlüsener method is a treatment for people with obesity. If you are of normal weight and just want to lose “a few kilos”, this is not the right place for you – excess weight requiring treatment, which we determine in the introductory consultation, is a prerequisite. The method is also not suitable:

  • during pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • immediately after quitting smoking – wait a few months until your body has adjusted
  • for children only from about eleven years of age, if there is excess weight requiring treatment and the child understands and accepts the necessity – together with the parents
  • with certain pre-existing conditions we decide on adjustments in the introductory consultation

There is no upper age limit. Older people in particular benefit from the relief for joints, heart and circulation.

Origin of the method

The method was developed by Heinz Schlüsener in his practice in Bottrop. It has been in use unchanged for over 40 years and is recommended by people who have experienced its success themselves. Dr Kerle learned the method from him and has brought it to Berlin for many years – with the experience of a specialist who has practised acupuncture since 1987. Answers to the most frequent questions can be found in our questions and answers.

Legal notice: Acupuncture is a complementary medical method; its effectiveness for weight reduction is not generally recognised by scientific evidence. We inform you about possible side effects before treatment.

Frequently asked questions on this topic

How much weight can I lose?

That depends on your starting weight, your metabolism and your consistency. Those who stick exactly to the diet plan during the three weeks of the reduction phase see a clear change on the scales – those who only half do it see nothing. There is no such thing as “half” an addiction treatment. We deliberately do not give specific figures; every body is different, and the law rightly forbids doctors to make such promises.

Do the needles make me lose weight?

No – the needles take away your craving for food. The change of diet does the weight loss. The acupuncture ensures that you can keep it up without constantly fighting hunger.

Is the diet during treatment one-sided?

No. Your body receives all the necessary vitamins, minerals and trace elements, as well as sufficient protein. What is reduced is the amount of calories, not the supply of nutrients.

Is the treatment safe for my health?

The method has been in use for decades and the diet is designed so that no deficiency arises. As a medical specialist, Dr Kerle clarifies your state of health, pre-existing conditions and medication in advance. With high blood pressure, diabetes and unfavourable blood values, the readings frequently improve as the weight comes down, in our experience – medication is monitored and adjusted medically during this time. Acupuncture is considered low-risk when performed professionally; extremely rarely (around 1 in 50,000) a minimal pinhead-sized bruise can occur at the puncture site. Hypoallergenic needles and plasters are available – and if you really dislike needles: for needle-phobic patients we keep adhesive metal pellets ready that work via acupressure; we explain how they are used.

How does the treatment affect blood pressure?

With any reduction in food intake, blood pressure drops slightly. In most cases no countermeasure is needed. If you take blood pressure medication, we check your readings during treatment and adjust the dose if necessary – never on your own.

Will I be in a bad mood or feel weak?

No, on the contrary. The ear acupuncture is placed at calming points – you remain calm and balanced. Most people feel fit and full of energy during the reduction phase and experience the time as a cleansing.

How often do I have to come to the practice?

It starts with the in-depth introductory seminar. After that you come in, ideally weekly, to be weighed and for a short talk. If you live far away, we also support you by phone – many of our patients come from far afield.

Can I repeat the treatment?

Yes, until you have reached your target weight. Between two reduction phases there is a maintenance phase of at least three weeks. Returning patients pay €60 instead of €120, because the introductory seminar is not needed again.

What is the maintenance phase?

After the three weeks of reduction come three weeks of maintenance: with the maintenance plan you stabilise your weight and learn to adjust your diet to your actual needs. That is the key against the yo-yo effect. The kidney tea from the reduction phase is no longer taken in the maintenance phase.

What is the kidney tea for?

When the body breaks down its fat reserves, acetone is produced. The kidney tea stimulates the kidneys so that it is excreted more quickly. It is part of the reduction phase and is dropped in the maintenance phase.

What happens if I briefly do not stick to the diet plan?

The scales stand still, blood sugar rises, hunger returns – you do yourself no favour. A slip is no reason to give up: return to the plan immediately and carry on.

Will I only lose weight in certain parts of the body?

No. You lose volume everywhere – figure, mobility and face change visibly.

What happens to the skin if I lose a lot of weight?

In our experience, how well the skin tightens follows a genetic blueprint: with good connective tissue, even large weight losses are compensated surprisingly well. Support your skin from the start – daily moisturising, massaging the problem zones with a slightly rough glove after showering, plenty of exercise.

Can I do sport or go to the sauna during treatment?

Yes, both. Before any physical exercise, take two spoonfuls of honey or sugar to keep your circulation stable – this is also in your plan.

Do hormones interfere with weight reduction?

No, once the body has got used to taking them – which is usually the case after about six months. Tell us in the introductory consultation about all the preparations you take; as a specialist in hormone medicine, Dr Kerle keeps an eye on this.

Can I take part during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

No. A calorie-reduced diet is not suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding. We are happy to advise you during this time in our gynaecological consultation and to plan the weight reduction for afterwards.

I am of normal weight and just want to lose a few kilos – is that possible?

No. The Schlüsener method is a treatment for people with genuine excess weight – not for people of normal weight who want to lose a few kilos for the summer. We determine in the introductory consultation whether there is excess weight requiring treatment. Those who do not have it get an honest answer from us instead of a treatment.

I have just stopped smoking – can I start straight away?

That is not advisable. The weight gain caused by nicotine withdrawal can extend over months; both changes at the same time overtax the body. We plan the right time together with you.

Can children lose weight with this method too?

Yes, from about eleven years of age – if there is excess weight requiring treatment and the child understands and accepts the necessity. We make the decision after medical assessment together with the parents.

Is there an age limit?

Not upwards. Health improvements are especially valuable for older people: less strain on joints, heart and circulation.

Can I go on holiday during treatment?

Unfavourable for hotel travellers – the diet plan requires preparing your own meals and discipline. Time the start of treatment so that no trip falls within the three-week reduction phase.

Where does the Schlüsener method come from?

It was developed by Heinz Schlüsener in his practice in Bottrop. His acupuncture deviates from every textbook: the combination of needles is individual for every patient and takes away the addiction. The method has been in use unchanged for decades and is recommended by people who have experienced its success themselves. Dr Kerle learned it from him and has practised it in Berlin for many years.

What does the weight reduction cost?

The complete package for new patients costs €120: introductory seminar, acupuncture, diet and maintenance plan and weekly support over three weeks of reduction and three weeks of maintenance. Returning patients pay €60 because the seminar is not needed again. Six weeks of medical support that pays for itself: what you save on snacks, sweets, eating out and weekly shopping during this time offsets the cost in our experience. The treatment is a self-pay service; some private insurers reimburse acupuncture in part.
